Savannah Experiment

“Sensitivity of the Australian Monsoon to Savannah Fire” is a project by Prof. Amanda Lynch with School of Geography and Environmental Science at Monash.

Each 21 year simulation takes about 6-12 weeks to execute on a single processor. Using Nimrod, we executed the experiment on the Pragma grid separating each simulation into 252 monthly steps.

First Savannah experiment

The first experiment performed 90 experiments on the following Pramga resources:

  • mahar
  • rocks-52
  • ume
  • jupiter
  • pragma001
  • amata1
  • tgc

This experiment ran for, effectively, 143 days and has produced promising results.

Second Savannah experiment

We are in the process preparing the second Savannah experiment. There will be three notable improvements over the first experiment.

  • Improved parameter sampling using experimental design techniques using a new Nimrod experiment design tool.
  • Improved scheduling decisions to reduce file copying and increasing resilience.
  • Expand the testbed to other grids including TeraGrid and OSG.

Experiment Status

The second Savannah experiment is currently being set up. Resources and their current status are:

  • Rocks-52 - Ready
  • Mahar - Ready (But missing some vf_camm files)
  • tg-grid1 - Needs to be tested
  • osg-gw-2 - Needs to be tested
  • xsvc.asc.hpcc.jp - Needs to be tested

Resource requirements

If you wish to included your cluster into the next Savannah experiment, please contact Colin and Cindy and check that your resource matches the following requirements:

  • Linux on 32bit Intel
  • GT2.4 or GT4 GRAM submission (other submission types will be added soon)
  • /bin/ksh on the processing nodes
  • 80GB free diskspace for runtime checkpoint storage (temporary data. Does not require backup. Only needs to be accessed on the front node)
  • A GLOBUS_TCP_PORT_RANGE to allow incoming connections from any other participating resource. Outward connections from the frontnode to any other participating resources.
  • an account for Colin Enticott ColinDetails
  • and an account for Elisabeth Kain
